I clenched my eyes closed, refusing to acknowledge the shadow that darkened the bedroom door. Maybe if I ignored it, it would go away. Maybe it was just all in my head. Maybe the denial would save my sanity. Maybe it was all just a nightmare, and I’d wake up at any minute. Something tugged at the blankets that I had fisted in my hands. Oh dear God. I took a breath and prayed that it was just a matter of the blanket shifting with me. Even if I hadn’t moved. Then the tug happened again, only harder. The precious hold I had on denial slipped finally when the tug turned into a yank. The blanket and sheet were pulled off of me. I gasped and dumbly opened my eyes to see what fresh hell I was experiencing now.
Two dark hands were at the bottom of my bed, holding the bundled blankets. The hairs on the back neck rose, and I watched, frozen in place, as the body connected to those hands rose at the end of my bed. It started as a shadow, with bright yellow eyes and a sharp, sinister grin. I stiffened, but slowly it contorted into a solid vision. The creature had black skin, blending easily with the shadows, and short cropped silver hair that caused him to stand out just as much as the glow of his eyes. Horns rose from the creature’s temples and curled up along his scalp. But the grin caught drew the eye down to it. It widened and showed an array of sharp, serrated teeth. “Look, what a tasty treat,” the monster hissed as he climbed further onto the bed. It was way too close and somewhere common sense told me I needed to get as far from the creature crawling towards me as possible. I jerked my legs upward and shifted up towards the headboard. I nearly fell off the bed, but the creature caught my ankle in an iron hold. The touch of his skin against mine was burning. I didn’t resist the urge to shriek as he jerked me back towards him. It had me splayed on the bed and he placed his other feverish hand against my thigh. “He won’t mind if I have a bite,” he said as he dove between my thighs. His nose rubbed against me and he inhaled sharply, his glowing eyes closing. “I want to eat it.” I flailed. I needed this monster away from me fast. I planted my hand against his brow, the horns that adorned it biting into the flesh of my palm. I tried to shove him away, his horns digging in further, but he didn’t budge. “Get away!” I begged, wanting nothing more than to have space between us. “Now, now Corbis,” another voice cut through the room. “If you eat the new pet, there’s no way we can get Master to full power.” The new voice had me frantically looking through the room. There was more? Another creature stepped out of the wall, this one a dusky red. He had a humanoid figure, save for the long, thin tail that trailed behind him. He wore dark pants that interrupted the red. He purred as he grabbed my wrists and gently pushed them into the pillows over my head. “Don’t fret, kitten. I won’t let him eat you before I get to.” He looked over his shoulder at his companion. “You are just supposed to strike fear. If you want to taste of her like that, dial down the terror so I could interject some lust. It would make this a little less painful.” “Terror feeds Master,” the creature said at the end of my bed. “The more frightened it is, the more power the Master gets.” Master? That meant there were more monsters. I looked up at the creature holding my arms down. “Please don’t hurt me. I’ll do whatever you want. Do you want money?” I asked. “I have camera equipment worth thousands. Please.” He hushed me, sitting on the bed beside me. That was when I noticed the pitch blackness of his eyes. He reached down to caress my face, his touch still gentle, though the hold he had on my wrists was firm. His fingers brushed down my cheek, sweeping slowly to my chin where he urged it up so I was focused on him. “You are okay, kitten,” he whispered to me. His voice rumbled through him and into me, putting something warm in my gut. I tried to close my thighs, anything to smother the sudden burn that started there. The monster between them kept them apart, but he inhaled sharply. “Oh,” Corbis growled. “That scent, Jordom.” He buried his face back against my pelvis until he drifted down until he was buried right back between my thighs. “Maybe we should play with the pet before we eat it.” That was enough to trigger a snap in me, like a spell was broken. I flailed as much as the hands holding me down allowed. I got a foot on the monster’s shoulder and I tried desperately to force him away from me. My skin crawled and panic welled up in my gut. “I told you,” the monster holding my arms sang. “If you insist on invoking your terror, it brings down the enjoyment.” Jordom leaned down to me, tsking as he ignored my attempts to pull my hands from his iron grip. “Give more room for lust to breathe and the fun that could be had,” he purred to me. “The more pleasure could be had.” “Don’t rape me,” I whispered. “I have herpes,” I lied. “The clap. So many diseases that your dick will probably fall off after you put it in me.” Corbis laughed against me. It was a cackle that shook right through me. He sat up, showing me his teeth, “Liar, liar. Should I set your pants on fire?” “Lust does not provide me the power that it does you,” a cultured voice cut through the haze of fear. The shadow that had been haunting me for the last few days stepped fully into my bedroom. As it moved, the shadows that clung to it parted like an ominous cloud. The creature towered over the bed. His facial features were more elegant than the other two, even with the gray skin. He had a regal straight nose complimented by high cheekbones but didn’t nothing to take away from the firm set of his mouth. The two things that connected him with the glow of his red eyes and the large crown of horns that rose from his head, nearly obscuring his long, white hair. He was dressed as if he were attending court, wearing trousers that nearly hid his cloven hooves and a waistcoat that clung to his trim torso. Demon, an inner voice screamed. The two others could’ve been easily labeled under the broad definition of monster. But this was definitely a demon. He swept closer to the bed, not making a noise. He barely spared me a glance. “This is enough. I can draw power from the human on my own from here. The two of you need to find the summoner,” he said evenly. “I will need to feed,” Jordom said, releasing my hands. “Soon,” he said, sounding meek. “I could draw nothing from her as she is now.” I took advantage of my new freedom and immediately scrambled back up the headboard. Corbis’s claws dug into my thighs and left red angry lines on my skin. He grinned and looked ready to spring at me. The unnamed demon caught Corbis’s face in a large hand. “I gave you a chore to do,” he warned, his voice deepening. “Do not make me repeat myself.”
