TeaserI was beginning to think that I should’ve listened to Avery. If I had listened to my sister, there would be a better chance of me being able to sleep at night. As it was, I was laying in my bed, a sleep app playing the sounds of the rain forest through my tiny bedroom to cover the sounds that bled through the wall.
There was a feminine moan that echoed into my room, accompanied by the occasional shout of profanity. There was a rhythmic beat of what I could only assume was a headboard bouncing against the wall. It seemed like a repeat performance from yesterday. I was so tired, and it felt like my neighbors were going for a marathon. I lost track of how long they had been going on. By now, if it had been normal sex, someone had to be done. They needed to run out of steam. But it kept going. Irrationally tired, I sat up. And they kept going. I got up and snatched my robe off the doorknob to the bedroom. I shrugged it on and went to the front door. I didn’t think after that; I went to the only place the noise could come from. My next-door neighbor.

After dinner, the three of us ended up just lounging on the couch. The knowledge that I would have to make the first move had me considering the thigh closest to me. Did we have enough time to digest? Did I really want sex between the two of them right now?
Yeah. After Adam came in and joined the sweet kiss Cam had been giving me, there was no turning off the fire he had started. But the ultimatum had me hung up on it. It shouldn’t. I should be more than willing to just be official with the both of them. It was what we were doing in the beginning, anyway. I considered the movie that Adam had put on. A superhero I couldn’t put a name to stepped out of dark clouds on the battlefield. He held a hammer and more started appearing out of shining circles. Adam and Cam were fixed on the television. They both would be perfectly fine with just watching the movie. I released a sigh and put my hand on Cam’s thigh. I drummed my fingers when he didn’t immediately react. It didn’t feel like he even twitched. The erection that had come up while he kissed me had waned during dinner. It no longer tented the front of his pants. I clenched my eyes closed, refusing to acknowledge the shadow that darkened the bedroom door. Maybe if I ignored it, it would go away. Maybe it was just all in my head. Maybe the denial would save my sanity.
Maybe it was all just a nightmare, and I’d wake up at any minute. Something tugged at the blankets that I had fisted in my hands. Oh dear God. I took a breath and prayed that it was just a matter of the blanket shifting with me. Even if I hadn’t moved. Then the tug happened again, only harder. We crept quietly into the darkness. A musty scent invaded my nose and it took everything for me not to sneeze. I held a flashlight in one fist and an EMF meter in the other. The light blinking to each color minutely, I didn’t know what it meant. I didn’t want to be here.
Jason edged around me, his flashlight bigger than mine cut through the darkness like a beacon. His light touched the walls, giving me a view of a pentagram in bright red spray paint. For some reason it gave me chills. “School kids are dumb,” I announced, trying to shake off this stupid fear. “Paint shit on the walls to put spookiness to urban legends and creepy pastas.” I turned away from the wall and took a breath, wondering just what I had gotten myself into. |
Author NotesI'll be putting serial shenanigans here. Admittedly to make it easier to post on social media. Yes, I'm being lazy but trying to be organized at the same time. Archives
